Paul Henley began his career in the 1970s, carrying out anthropological field research amongst the indigenous groups of southern Venezuela. After completing his doctorate in 1979, he held various academic posts before training for 3 years as a director-cameraman at the National Film and Television School. In 1987, he was appointed the director of the newly-created Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology at the University of Manchester. He has since made films for both academic and television audiences, and has published extensively in visual anthropology, including The Adventure of the Real, a study of the cinematographic methods of Jean Rouch, which will be published by University of Chicago Press in January 2010. Paul Henley a commencé sa carrière dans les années 1970, en menant des recherches anthropologiques sur le terrain parmi les groupes autochtones du sud du Venezuela. Après avoir terminé son doctorat en 1979, il a occupé divers postes académiques, puis a suivi une formation de trois ans, en réalisation et prise de vues, à la National Film and Television School. En 1987, il a été nommé directeur du Centre d'Anthropologie Visuelle de Granada TV, qui venait d’être créé à l'Université de Manchester. Il a réalisé des films, tant pour un public universitaire que pour la télévision, et a publié de nombreux ouvrages en anthropologie visuelle, dont The Adventure of the Real, une étude des pratiques cinématographiques de Jean Rouch, qui sera publié par les Presses universitaires de Chicago, en Janvier 2010.
