Séminaire en anthropologie linguistique présenté par Alexandra Pillen (Université de Londres, Grande-Bretagne)

The Kurdish word berxwedan stands out today as 'resistance, endurance, uprising'. At its centre, we find xwe, the reflexive pronoun translated as one's own, or propre in French and das eigene in German. A linguistic anthropology that builds on the work of Don Brenneis and David Parkin offers empirical facts to document the current role of this pronoun. Xwe prevails today in London in the wake of nearly 52 centuries of documented history of words traceable to the Indo-European root *swe. Scholarship by Émile Benveniste, Mehmûdê Bazîdî, and Alexander Jaba provides the solid base to explore its contemporary relevance. As an instance of segmentary resonance in language, xwe hints at a space of one's own in language.
