The role of knowledge in the construction of education policy across EuropeIn Europe, information and expertise are now both more widely distributed and more readily accessible than ever before. At the same time, expectations of transparency and public accountability have increased. In many ways, knowledge is coming to play a new role in policy: we can now distinguish 'post-bureaucratic' from conventional 'bureaucratic' regimes and show that that each presupposes a specific kind of knowledge and a specific way of using it. Cognition in social interaction • a multi-layered approach - Ludvigsen

In this talk learning is viewed as multi-layered phenomena. A socio-genetic approach is used in order to understand human activity, and to show how categories are a fundamental part of learning in a specific type of institutional practice. Empirically I explore how students talk and reason when they are exposed to a set of categories taken from scientific discourse. The findings imply that the categories in the progressive inquiry model could guide the students towards a more systematic orientation when prompted by the teacher.

James Clemens-Seely presents a practical introduction to the merits and pitfalls of technical ear training as an approach to increasing critical listening and analytic skills in developing audio professionals.  Ear training topics discussed include training tools, self-study vs. large class sizes, sensible goals and overall usefulness in career development. James Clemens-Seely supervises the learning experience of participatants of the Audio Recording Engineer Practicum at the Banff Centre, AB, and has taught Technical Ear Training at McGill University, QC.
