Productive Multivocality and Methodological Determinism - Suthers

The Learning Sciences are both blessed and cursed with the participation of diverse disciplines and their associated research traditions. Some have argued that no unified field is possible due to the incommensurability of theoretical and methodological traditions involved. Perhaps no serious researcher holds the opposite view, a naive eclecticism, but a third position is possible. I hold that a theoretically and methodologically homogenous field is not desirable, yet it is possible to engage diverse voices in "productive multivocality". In this talk I will focus on methodological determinism, the proposition that methods rest on presuppositions that remain inescapably embedded in them, ...

Turbulence et simulation : la belle et la bête / Turbulence and Computers: Beauty and the Beast

Extremely powerful computers with up to 100,000 processors have enabled unprecedented numerical simulations that are pushing the boundaries of knowledge. Join Prof. Gianluca Iaccarino as he demonstrates how he and colleagues from the Center for Turbulence Research at Stanford University are using the world’s largest computers to study fluid dynamics in interesting ways. The talk will describe several applications including creating a planet in seven days, quieting noisy jets and slowing a Formula 1 car. In this talk, Prof. Iaccarino will provide a window ...

“Come on guys, use your sense!” Illuminating the ‘incarnate’ work of teaching - Koshmann

Twelve years ago, Lehrer and Schauble rolled out a newly-designed math and science curriculum in a particular 5th gradeclassroom (Lehrer & Schauble, 2004, 2011). In this talk, I will examine a brief fragment of interaction recorded in this classroom. The participants observed here are trying to work out how to graphically represent a set of data. It is a problem of reconciling therange of values to be presented with the space available on the sheet of graph paper with which they are working. In the courseof working out this problem, they engage in the concerted generation of a series of number ...
