Mary MORRISSY, romancière et nouvelliste irlandaise

Mary Morrissyest une écrivaine irlandaise. Née à Dublin en 1957, elle est l’auteur d’unrecueil de nouvelles, A Lazy Eye (1993),et de deux romans, Mother of Pearl (1996) et The Pretender(2000). Seul Mother of Pearl est traduit en français : LaCôte d’Ève (Paris,Autrement, 1997). Mary Morrissy rédige également des chroniques littérairespour The Irish Times, anime chaqueannée un atelier d’écriture dans le cadre du programme d’été de l’université del’Iowa, aux États-Unis, et fut titulaire d’une bourse de recherche luipermettant d’écrire son troisième roman, une autobiographie romancée de Bella,la sœur du célèbre dramaturge, Seán O’Casey. Finement ciselée, profonde, émouvante, sans jamais verser dansle sentimentalisme, son œuvre s’intéresse à la vie intérieure des femmes. C’està ce titre que Mary Morrissy fut l’invitée d’honneur du colloque du Groupe derecherche en études irlandaises (ERIBIA-GREI) de l’université de CaenBasse-Normandie sur les écrivaines irlandaises. L’intervention filmée fut enregistréelors de cette manifestation, le 5 novembre 2010.

Mary Morrissy was born in Dublin in 1957.She has published one collection of short stories, A Lazy Eye (London,Jonathan Cape, 1993). Her novels are Mother of Pearl (London, JonathanCape, 1996) and The Pretender (London, Jonathan Cape, 2000). She won aHennessy Award for short fiction in 1984, a Lannan Literary Prize in 1995, andwas shortlisted for the Whitbread Prize in 1996. She also reviews for The Irish Times. For several years, Maryhas taught creative writing for the University of Iowa summer programme, andhas recently returned from a scholarship to New York, where she was researchingher latest novel, an imagined autobiography of Bella O’Casey, the sister ofSeán O’Casey. She lives in Dublin. Precisely written, powerfully emotional,though unsentimental, her work is focused on women’s interior lives. This iswhy Mary Morrissy was the key-note speaker of the conference on Irish WomenWriters organized in the Université deCaen Basse-Normandie France by the Groupe de recherche en études irlandaises (ERIBIA-GREI) on5-6 November 2010.
