Descriptif

Issa Traoré alias Ken Lagaré taught Malian rhythms on the jembe and dundun to students and faculty of the Department of Music at the University of Lethbridge. Rhythms included the Bamana version of Sokonikoun, originally from the Wassoulou people; 'Fula ton-si ton-si' referring to a specific community of Fula (Peul) people who exhibits a particular hairstyle; and Diansa, the Bamana version of Markafoli from the Marka people. Towards the end of workshop, Ken demonstrated a performance on the tamani. This percussion workshop was organized by Leo Brooks, an Individualized Multidisciplinary Master of Arts student at the Global Drums Studio of percussion instructor Adam Mason on January 20, 2020. Ken's travel expenses were funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). (English subtitles are available.)
