Jean-Louis Parmentier (Unicaen, Craham), Rançon et rachat des captifs en Europe du Nord (VIIe-XIIe s.)

La rançon est une forme du traitement des captifs qui consiste à leur restitution en échange d’un prix fixé. En Europe du Nord entre les VIIe et XIIe siècles, la rançon est un usage attesté dans les différentes sociétés. Dans cette intervention, nous tentons d’en présenter les mécanismes, les sources utilisées, les problématiques qu’engendre cette pratique. Une partie de la présentation est également consacrée au travail de recherche et ses méthodes pour traiter le sujet.

Ransom is a form of treatment of captives that consists of their return in exchange for a fixed price. In Northern Europe between the 7th and 12th centuries, ransom is a practice that is attested in different societies. In this talk, we attempt to present the mechanisms, the sources used, and the problems generated by this practice. A part of the presentation is devoted to the research work and its methods for dealing with the subject.
