Peter Agre est né aux Etats-Unis en 1949. Titulaire d'une licence de chimie et d'un doctorat de médecine, il s'est orienté vers la recherche biomédicale. En 1991, il isole la première protéine capable de faciliter les mouvements de l'eau à travers une membrane biologique. Sa persévérance dans la recherche de la compréhension des rôles physiologiques des aquaporines et son professionnalisme, lui ont valu le Prix Nobel de Chimie en 2003, conjointement avec son compatriote Roderick MacKinnon.
Peter Agre se bat pour les droits de l'Homme et milite pour défendre le libre accès aux résultats scientifiques « Open Access ».
