Descriptif
Marcel BABIN (CNRS), Director of Takuvik, tells us about his International Research Laboratory (IRL).
Takuvik is an IRL created in 2011 through a partnership between Université Laval and CNRS. Its research program covers the study and modeling of Arctic and sub-Arctic ecosystems and geosystems.
With regard to ocean ecosystems and geosystems, the program studies various aspects, including phytoplankton, nitrogen processes and zooplankton. The aim is to investigate how environmental changes are affecting Arctic Ocean ecosystems and carbon fluxes, particularly at the lower trophic levels that support marine life. Takuvik also strives to create an innovative Arctic observation system, develop ecosystem models, and contribute to the training of Arctic ecosystem specialists.
With regard to terrestrial ecosystems and geosystems, the program studies polar environments and their evolution since the last glacial maximum, focusing on the effects of anthropogenic activities and climate change. Key issues revolve around understanding past environmental changes and their relevance to current warming trends. The program uses a variety of scientific approaches and collaborates with a network of climate and weather stations, field research stations and base camps managed by the Centre d’études nordiques (CEN).
Takuvik also contributes to the training of young researchers, in particular through the supervision and hosting of master’s students, doctoral students and post-docs.
Takuvik’s overall objective is to better understand the effects of climate change and human activities on Arctic terrestrial and oceanic ecosystems. This includes developing more accurate models, devising innovative solutions and training specialists.
