Canals, Roger (1980-....)

Après une maîtrise de philosophie et un master en anthropologie et communication audiovisuelle obtenus à Barcelone, Roger Canals Vilageliu (Barcelone, 1980) est accepté à l’EHESS de Paris en 2003, pour un doctorat en anthropologie visuelle sur les images de María Lionza (Venezuela), en cotutelle avec l’Université de Barcelone, sous la direction de Jean-Paul Colleyn et de Joan Bestard. Il obtient son doctorat en 2008 avec la mention Très honorable avec félicitations du jury à l’unanimité. Il avait reçu, en 2005, le prix du CNRS-Images attribué au meilleur projet de premier film ethnographique pour réaliser son long-métrage Visages d’une déesse vénézuélienne (2007). Roger Canals a participé à plusieurs congrès et présenté son film dans divers festivals internationaux de cinéma ethnographique. Depuis 2007, il est professeur du master d’anthropologie visuelle et fait partie du CINAF, groupe de recherche consacré à l’étude des cultures indiennes et afro-américaines de l’Université de Barcelone. Auteur de plusieurs articles en anglais, français, espagnol et catalan, il prépare actuellement la publication de sa thèse et un nouveau film ethnographique.
After a Master in Philosophy and a Master in Anthropology and Audiovisual Communication obtained in Barcelona, Roger Canals Vilageliu (Barcelona, 1980) was accepted at the EHESS in Paris, in 2003, to undertake under the direction of Jean-Paul Colleyn and Joan Bestard, a doctoral research in visual anthropology, about the images of María Lionza (Venezuela), in cotutorship with the University of Barcelona. He obtained his PhD in 2008 with honours and congratulations from the jury. In 2005, he received the CNRS-Images’ grant for the best first ethnographic film project, in order to make his feature film Faces of a Venezuelan Goddess (2007). He participated in several conferences and presented his film at several international ethnographic film festivals. Since 2007 he has been a Professor in the Master of Visual Anthropology, and is part of CINAF, a research group devoted to the study of Indian and African-American cultures, at the University of Barcelona. Author of several papers in English, French, Spanish and Catalan, he is currently preparing the publication of his thesis and a new ethnographic film.
