| Adam Kuper |
| Né en Afrique du Sud en 1941, Adam Kuper engage ses études à l' University of the Witwatersrand de Johannesburg. Il parachève son cursus en Angleterre, à Cambridge, où il obtient en 1966 son doctorat à la suite d'une recherche conduite dans le désert de Kalahari au Botswana et en Ouganda. Enseignant à l'université de Makerere (Kampala), il poursuit ses recherches sur le terrain en Afrique. A partir des années 1970, s'ajoute au terrain de l'Afrique australe celui de la Jamaïque. Il travaille alors en collaboration avec la National Planning Agency liée aux bureaux du Premier Ministre. Entre les années 1970 et 1984, il voyage entre différentes universités d'Europe et des Etats-Unis (Londres, Leyde, Gothenburg, Santa Barbara,
) pour reprendre en 1985 la chaire de Social Anthropology de la Brunel University West London où il fonde le département des Sciences Humaines. En 1973, il édite une histoire de l'anthropologie sociale britannique (traduite en français). Depuis, il continue à étudier l'histoire intellectuelle de l'anthropologie. Son Travail, distingué par l'attribution du Leverhulme Major Research Grant Award, lui permet de se consacrer jusqu'en 2005 à ses recherches les plus récentes concernant par exemple le mariage et l'inceste dans l'Angleterre du dix-neuvième siècle. Il continue, par ailleurs, à suivre le travail de ses étudiants sur l'ethnographie de l'Afrique du Sud, l'histoire de la discipline, l'économie familiale et la parenté. |
