Descriptif
En octobre 2004, un groupe de chercheurs français du Laboratoire des Mécanismes de Transfert en Géologie (UMR LMTG, IRD-CNRS-UPS Toulouse) organise en partenariat avec leurs collègues équatoriens, péruviens et brésiliens une expédition scientifique internationale sur les traces de Francisco de Orellana.
Le Rio Napo, issu de la cordillère des Andes d’Equateur, draine un bassin de 110 000 km2 qui se caractérise par un comportement climatique et hydrologique particulier marqué par un fort gradient altitudinal, une géologie andine dominée par un fort volcanisme actif, et un avant pays amazonien mal connu, où les mesures hydrologiques sont inexistantes, les observations géologiques et botaniques rares.
L’expédition Rio Napo 2004, justifiée en premier lieu par des études hydrologiques, a aussi permis une approche conjointe de plusieurs spécialités scientifiques: géophysique, hydrologie, géologie, paléontologie, botanique.
