Lectrice de français à la University of London Institute à Paris

Anna-Louise MILNE est senior Lecturer, Director of Graduate Studies and Research.

I completed my first degree in Philosophy and French Studies at Balliol College, Oxford University, embarked on graduate work in philosophy in France before deciding that the Comparative Literature Department of Columbia University in New York was the best place to develop my interdisciplinary interests. My research and writing first focused on the work of Jean Paulhan, the milieu he established around the Nouvelle Revue Française and the connections between this review and the broader moment of European literary modernism (The Extreme In-Between. Jean Paulhan’s Place in the Twentieth Century, Legenda, 2006, and a joint issue of The Romanic Review, La Nouvelle Revue Française and Modernism, 2008). More recently my interests in the literary review as a place of intersection and confrontation has extended to the broader frame of the city Paris as a crossroads: the different modes and locations of encounter and experiment, particularly between different migrant and expatriate communities. This has involved me in workshop initiatives particularly in association with the CINQ Studios in the Centquatre Arts Centre and the Kolone Association working with young migrants and asylum seekers in Paris. I recently completed a Cambridge Companion to the Literature of Paris (CUP, 2013), an edited collection of essays on May 68 (Palgrave/Macmillan, 2010), and am currently finishing an experimental exercise in urban history, entitled 75. La Requalification des déchets divers. I also have a strong interest in translation studies and practice and have published and spoken on translations of Proust, Gide, Conrad, James, Sartre, Tournier and Chamoiseau. This work has involved me in an advisory capacity in the development of an MA in Cultural Translation with the American University in Paris.

As a President’s Graduate Fellow of Columbia University I taught in the undergraduate programme of Columbia College. In Paris I have taught for the Ecole normale supérieure, the universities of Paris III-Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris Diderot-Paris VII and the American University in Paris.
