Descriptif

In person-oriented demonstrative systems, the medial distance is associated with the addressee; in several languages, its etymology reflects this, deriving from the fusion of an earlier demonstrative with a locative or genitive in the second person. In Siwi Berber, however, this fusion has left an unusual trace: medial demonstratives show the typologically rare feature of gender/number agreement with the addressee. The result is a four-term person-oriented system (like barely 3% of languages in Diessel's WALS sample), extended equally to pronominal and adnominal demonstratives, locative adverbs, and adverbs of manner. This paper examines the synchronic usage – both spatial and referential – of these terms in a comparative typological perspective, and considers the system's diachronic development in light of comparative Eastern Berber and wider Berber data, along with the possible role of early contact with Arabic.
