Using medical imaging methods in environmental sciences

  • Yvan CAPOWIEZ (INRAE Avignon):

How X-ray tomography and image analysis enlarge our vision of the functional role of earthworms in soil.

Yvan CAPOWIEZ yvan.capowiez@inrae.frAgricultural engineer, Yvan did a PhD in soil biology about the roles of earthworms in the soil and their modeling.

During his career, he first had to develop observation tools allowing precisely to understand and analyze their behavior.

This is how he developed techniques for radiotracing worms in the ground and used X-ray tomography extensively to "see through the ground".How X-ray tomography and image analysis enlarge our vision of the functional role of earthworms in soil?

Abstract: Earthworms enjoy a very positive image with the general public, but this poorly masks the fact that we know very little about their ecology and their actions in the soil, which is an opaque environment.

The development of X-ray tomography provides access to the networks of galleries created by worms in the soil.

But seeing is not enough, we must then quantitatively characterize these networks to understand how the worms modify transfer properties in the soil and also be able to group the different species of worms into truly functional groups.
