----

Developed in the late 1960s, absolute dating by thermoluminescence (TL) has only been partially adopted in the field of archaeology. The complexity of various parameters that need to be controlled—such as local radiation levels and firing conditions—can present significant challenges. While TL dating poses relatively few issues for Paleolithic hearths, where a certain margin of error is acceptable due to the great antiquity of the periods involved, it is less commonly used for routine dating of pottery from the Neolithic onwards. However, TL dating has found a significant application in detecting forgeries, particularly in the field of pre-Columbian archaeology, where it is frequently employed to authenticate artifacts. This presentation will provide an overview of the current state of TL dating, addressing the key issues and considerations associated with this method, which has now been in use for over half a century.
