Descriptif

“I work a lot with scraps of the archive. I work a lot with unknown persons, nameless figures, ensembles, collectives, multitudes, the chorus. That’s where my heart resides.” Saidiya Hartman

This presentation will explore the work of Lela Harris, who was  commissioned by Lancashire Museums and Lancaster Black History group in 2022 to create 6 portraits of 18th Century Black Lancastrians as part of an permanent intervention at the Judge’s Lodging Museum in Lancaster in North West England. In this talk, Lela will describe the challenge of creating Black portraiture drawing only on fragments of historical records. She will detail the collaborative research process involved, including patient work with community groups and schools, and the inspiration she drew from a longer Black arts tradition - involving a combination of both “critical imagination” alongside formal historical research. Lela will share images of the finished portraits she made of the six 18th Century Black Lancastrian’s, who had previously been overlooked by history, and discuss the wider impact of this work on Lancaster’s understanding of its history. The session will also explore the personal impact of this commission on Lela’s understanding of her own African heritage and identity.
