First Steps: The Children of Renco Mine At the school of the Rio Tinto Gold Mine near Masvingo in Zimbabwe, children are taught dance as part of their school curriculum. Their bodies are totally engaged with the boys playing percussion whilst the girls take their first dance steps.

Pas de deux, pas de trois : Bulawayo Dancing In true Matabele tradition, the harmonising voices of a group of dancers singing a cappella rise from the veranda of a clinic as accompaniment to their dance steps that are reminiscent of Broadway in the thirties...

Un entrée digne : Isicathamiya in Durban Under the auspices of SATMA, all night Zulu men's choir competitions are organised by Paul every Saturday evening in Durban. The a cappella voices of the men rise into singing marked by furtive isteps, which is followed by a Best Dressed Man Competition where the men display their latest styles...

Mtshongolo : The Shangaan of Kagiso In Kagiso, a township west of Johannesburg, the Krugersdorp Stars, TK Swinyeleteni, partake in competitions every Sunday. The Shangaan rites of passage from birth to the age of adulthood are re-enacted over and again.

Sur la voie express. Cars rush by as an American boat follows its course.
Derrière la bibliothèque. Besides the building site of the Grand Bibliothèque in Paris, a train arrives.

A concert film of Hugh Masakela and a company of South African musicians, including Dolly Rathebe, Dorothy Masuku, Mara Louw, Mbusi Mhlongo, Jonas Gwangwa, Bayete, The Elite Swingsters, etc. Concert held as part of the exhibition, Afrique du sud : Musiques de liberté, La Villette, Paris, 1995. M. M. les locataires
In Noisy-le-Sec, a city-suburb in the North-East of Paris, the city forms a human landscape, painted from one encounter to the next. The characters participate in the invention of a story exploring past, present and future in parallel. In close contact with a handheld camera, they tell the stories of their lives and improvise a tale that is both authentic and imaginary. The urban images chosen as decor are complimented by a sound universe alternating between invented and live sounds. 16 mm, 64 mn, 1995.

A chauffeur drives his Madam about in downtown Johannesburg; visits to friends, townships, wastelands. The trip ends with a nuptial-funeral ball where the men dance to the cock's crow and the rhythm of Zulu music. 16 mm, 20 mn, 1984.

Feu Katjiru Muniombara d'Omuramba, près d'Epupa, "imminence grise" de la culture Omuhimba et conseiller du chef Kapika, chez qui j'étais pendant mon premier séjour au pays Omuhimba. (Ref.002NC33cp-wa)   Omukurukaze (Omukuruka"th"e comme dans "then"), ou "vieille mère", nom utilise pour les femmes d'un certain âge, disons les grands-mères. Son prénom est Kazinguruka (Ka « th »ingurkuka). Le 'z' se prononce comme « then » et le 's' comme « theory ». À la maison, on l'appelle le plus souvent Omukurukaze. Parfois, elle me demandait parfois si je connaissais son prénom. Oui, disais-je alors, en le répétant, avant de continuer de dire Omukurukaze. (Ref. RO51-04C)   Kakaendona Tjambiru et Rina. Kakaendona, la complice des 400 coups, fille cadette du chef. Personnage intelligent et intuitif. Elle organisa le groupe de jeunes venu participer à l'exposition à Windhoek. Elle dit que nos deux esprits se sont échangés. (Ref.DSC_0269b)   Photo "déclic". C'est en regardant cette photo que Rina Sherman a décidé de partir à la rencontre des Ovahimba. Feu le chef d'Etanga, fils de Veripaka, grand chef connu pour ses exploits de magie (éclairs et tonnerres dans les montagnes). Un homme de grande capacité de navigation et de diplomatie. (Ref.NB71-34TOY)   Kakaendona (centre) et Mukaandjoao (à droite) en train de mettre de la bouze de vâche sur les sols du campement d’Etanga. (Ref.NC34-18c)   Kapandi, fille aînée du chef, mariée avec Mahenje. Kapandi était le chef des équipes qui venaient enduire de bouze ma hutte et les couloirs du campement. (Ref.NC31-06b)   Kozondana, aîné de Mukaandjoao, «mon aîné», «mon enfant» préféré, petit garçon que j’ai vu grandir, qui venait se cacher sous ma tente avec sa sœur Nguaarua pour ne pas aller s’occuper des chèvres. Ils étaient couchés sur mon grand lit, jambes et le reste en l’air, ils mangeaient des bonbons, pendant que je travaillais sur l’ordinateur. Leur grand-mère, Kapandi, arrivait en hurlant, « où sont les enfants, ils doivent aller s’occuper des chèvres », je sortais vite pour lui dire que je n’avais vu personne. Elle savait que je mentais, mais elle partait et revenait plus tard, 2e fois, je l’invitais sous la tente pour voir les deux anges endormis au milieu du lit. Rires et réveil brutale, "Levez vous, vous mangez, alors, les chèvres !". (Ref.RO108-29b)   Vuaanderua, la reine du jeu de danse d'ondjongo. Accent circonflèxe sous le 'd', prononcé avec la langue contre les dents et non contre les gencives, idem pour 't' et 'n' marqués de ce même accent. Fille de la tante, sœur de la mère de feu le chef. Grande prêtresse de l'ondjongo et des rituels de possession, personnage controversé en raison de sa relation adultère avec Kamboo, désormais retournée avec son mari, Kandanda, grand alcoolique qui a « bu » tout leur bétail.
