Specialist of Lancashire radical culture in the early 19th century, and author of Peterloo: The English Uprising (Oxford, 2019) Robert Poole provides context to and explanation of the events that took place in Manchester on 16th August 1819. Eighteen people were killed and nearly 700 injured when the local yeomanry cavalry was sent in to arrest the speakers due to address the gathered crowds. On the bicentenary of the massacre, renewed interest has been shown by campaigners, scholars, film-makers and graphic novelists in the events that quickly became known as Peterloo.
Spécialiste de la culture radicale dans le Lancashire au début du XIXe siècle, et auteur de Peterloo : The English Uprising (Oxford, 2019), Robert Poole met en contexte et explique les événements qui se sont déroulés à Manchester le 16 août 1819. Dix-huit personnes ont été tuées et près de 700 blessées lorsque la yeomanry a été envoyée pour arrêter les orateurs qui devaient s’adresser à la foule rassemblée. À l’occasion du bicentenaire du massacre, il y a eu un regain d’intérêt chez des militants, des universitaires, des cinéastes et des auteurs pour les événements qui ont rapidement été connus sous le nom de Peterloo.
