Descriptif

The activity of narrating is a fundamental element of social cohesion and is inherently based on the temporal dimension in which human events are couched. Furthermore, an events’ narration is necessarily modulated through the aspectual and modal lens. But what happens if the language lacks any morphological tool to express TAM values? The radically tenseless language Ayoreo is a perfect testbed for this sort of investigation.

The presentation will focus on a brief oral narrative, checking the extent to which lexical substitutes can compensate for the lack of morphological expressive power. To preserve the due amount of suspense, this abstract will not provide the answer. All this abstract can disclose is that the presentation will conclude by briefly addressing the issue of language complexity. Namely: how complex a tenseless language is in comparison with a fully TAM-explicit language?
