Descriptif

During this talk, I question the significance or relevance of using the different methodologies and epistemologies of the three “waves” of sociolinguistic research (following Eckert (2012)’s terminology) when analyzing language variation and change. The focus will be on the methodology and results of a sociolinguistic study of language variation and change in an urbanized educated enclave in Middle Tennessee. The traditional dialect features of the fieldwork location are typically regarded as “rural”, “non-standard”, and “uneducated”, which raises several questions. In particular, I highlight the relevance of (a) finely describing the granularity of social space through multifactorial approaches; (b) taking into consideration internal, as well as external, social categories when analyzing a community; and (c) discussing the room left for individual agency when accounting for language variation and change.
