Descriptif

On the other side of the Mediterranean, atthe end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, international relations, and particularly French ones, played an important rolein the creation and establishment of a whole legal and judicial Egyptiansystem. The latter, took over, the dissemination of this French civil lawtradition throughout the Middle East and the Gulf countries.

It is through comparative law that Frenchlegal influence exists until today in the Egyptian legal system. This influencehas been particularly successful in the field of private legislation "theCivil Code". The main reformer of Egyptian law was Professor Abdel-RazzakAl-Sanhoury, who had prepared his two doctoral theses in Lyon under thesupervision of the great comparatist Édouard Lambert. Al Sanhoury, after hisfinal return to Egypt, put in place the first Egyptian national civil legislation, based on bases of comparative law and Muslim law.

Almost 170 years of Franco-Egyptiancooperation in the legal field, we can recall the historical context and enquiringourselves on the actual identity of Egyptian law and on the future of this cooperationat the level of comparative law and the dissemination of the civil lawtradition, which underlines the trademark of the French legal system. Egyptianlaw, is it a right now abandoned?
