Analysis and interpretation of students' dialogues - Baker
Research in the Learning Sciences gives a privileged place to the analysis of interactions between social actors and with the
milieux in which their collective activities are situated. In this presentation, and in this context, I want to engage in an inquiry
about the distinction between the epistemological concepts of "analysis" and of "interpretation, originating in physical and
human sciences, respectively. On the basis of a critical perspective on what might be termed the 'standard' approach to
analysing educational interactions (systematic application of determinate coding schemes), I will discuss the problem of the unit
of analysis of the processes of collective thinking-in-dialogue, and propound a dialogical perspective on alternative
interpretations of interaction. This will be illustrated with respect to multiple interpretative stances and perspectives on students'
argumentation dialogues.
