Descriptif

The challenges for teacher research in contemporary educational policy contexts, with particular reference to the role of teachers in curriculum and pedagogical development. I will begin my talk by outlining the idea of 'The teacher as a researcher' developed by Lawrence Stenhouse in the UK forty years ago, and trace how it's meaning changed with increasing government control over curriculum and pedagogy in schools. This will be contrasted with the realisation of the idea in the context of the curriculum reforms in Hong Kong that created space for school-based curriculum development. My talk will conclude with an outline of the main challenges for teacher research in educational systems that are increasingly shaped as quasi-markets.
